When I became a mom, my overall perspective about health and wellness changed. I went from not really caring about or prioritizing wellness to becoming more aware and focusing on my health and wellness AND my family’s health and wellness as a whole. (Read more about my story here!) Now, I enjoy living a healthy lifestyle and am proud of what I’m instilling in my kids. I also enjoy helping other mamas prioritize their health and wellness because when a mama pours into herself, it overflows into her family. Here’s my best tips and advice for how to create a healthier home!

What does it mean to have a “Healthier Home”?

Defining a “healthier home” can mean whatever YOU want it to mean. To me, a healthy home is prioritizing our nutrition, movement, personal growth, living in an environment that makes us feel supported and inspired and being aware of ingredients and products we’re using.

What does having a healthier home mean to you? Start there. Write out what your ideal home looks like, feels like, what you prioritize, how you spend your time, etc.

Healthy Habits

A lot of what we do and don’t do, comes down to our habits. Habits become apart of us and ultimately who we are as humans. So what habits are helping you live as the best version of you and which habits aren’t helping?

For me, creating a healthy home means we’re prioritizing fitness and movement. For me personally, that means I’m working out 5-6 days a week. I have a schedule and routine so my kids know that this is my workout time and they’re used to entertaining themselves. For my kids, it means getting them involved in their own activities that require movement. My kids are or have been involved in gymnastics, T-ball, soccer and jiu jitsu. Movement for your kids could mean going outside, running around at the park, playing active games. My biggest goal with movement and fitness is to show my kids that when you move your body, you’re celebrating your body, it’s helping you feel your best and it’s important to care for your body in this way. I want them to look forward to fitness.

Our healthy habits also include our nutrition habits. My perspective on nutrition is to fuel your body with things that are going to make it feel the best while also enjoying the things you love. I never want to deprive myself or my kids and be so strict on things that we overindulge later on or so we don’t get to enjoy. I think having a healthy home means there is balance.

Healthy Environment

How to create a healthier home also extends to your environment. This again, can mean whatever YOU want it to mean. To me, it means that things have a place, they’re organized and aesthetically pleasing. It means I have room to do the things I need to do and pour into my passions and that I feel energized and inspired while I’m working on things.

For my kids, it means they can be independent in getting out their toys and having room to play and imagine and create. It means they can go outside. They have space to draw or build, really just be a kid!

Product Awareness

The last part of creating a healthier home to me is being aware of ingredients in the products we’re using. This was the last piece that I started focusing on as I was (and continue to still) creating my healthier home. Now, when I am buying something, I look at the ingredients. I want to find things that have little ingredients or that I know what most of the ingredients are. I’m not perfect but I try to be more aware, something I wasn’t even thinking about before.
