We have been slowly adding to our house to make it feel like a home. (And I mean slowly! We’ve lived here for 2 years and we’re still not done.) One thing I’ve seen all over Instagram and love is a wooden welcome sign for your front porch so my mom and I decided to DIY one together! Here’s how we made our DIY front porch welcome sign.
Materials Needed and Pre-assembly for Welcome Sign
First you need to decide how large your sign will be. Our sign ended up being very tall because the letters we got are so big. So the very first step is to find your letters. I found our wooden letters at Michaels but there are similar letters on Amazon here.
Once you get your letters, space them out vertically on the floor how you want them displayed and measure how tall you need your pieces of wood to be.
Get your wood. We picked 3 pieces of 2×4 pine that we got from Home Depot. Get a little extra than what you need for assembly. While you’re at Home Depot (or wherever you’re getting your wood) pick up some screws and either a stain (if you want to stain your sign) or paint (if you’re going to paint it).
Materials
- Letters (we got some already finished white but you can get unfinished if you’d rather paint yours yourself.)
- Wood
- Screws
- Stain or paint
Assembling DIY Front Porch Welcome Sign
- The first step to assembling your DIY front porch welcome sign is to put the wood together. Cut the wood to the length you want your sign. (Your letters and how you want them spaced will determine that.)
- Put your wood together (we used 3 across) and measure the width. Cut 3 pieces (out of your extra wood) to be that width across.
- Lay your wood together (look for the best fronts and put them face down).
- Lay your 3 (width length) pieces across the boards. Place one about 6 inches from the top, one in the middle and one about 6 inches from the bottom.
- Screw the width length pieces to the board. We used 6 screws (2 attaching to each piece of the long wood boards.)
- Once the wooden piece of your welcome sign is secure, stain or paint it.
- Let it dry. (Ours dried really fast because we stained it and it was very sunny out!)
- Lay your letters out. Space them how you want before you glue. Use wood glue to attached the letters to your board.
Top Tip for DIY Front Porch Welcome Sign
If you’re putting it somewhere where the wind might knock it over, secure it somehow! I learned this the hard way when my sign smacked over and the letters fell off. Not only once, but twice before I secured it. I put my welcome sign on a fence near our front door. I secured it by using eyehook and latch.
